78 Mill Street originated as a shop on Almonte’s attractive main street. Over the years it had suffered through renovations that enabled it to function as a bank and eventually a lawyer’s office. Photographs of the original façade were hard to come by but fortunately when our renovations began the structure was able to tell it’s own story. As the layers were peeled back we found the original large wood moldings and ceilings that were as high as 14 feet. Fluted metal columns buried in the walls revealed the placement of the original doors and windows on the street level. With these clues, local architect Peter Mansfield was able to conceive of a design for the structure that we feel returns it to it’s original function and beauty. The street level is once again a retail shop and the fully renovated second level is an elegant apartment.
