Thoburn Mill began construction in the 1870's by textile merchant and later federal Member of Parliament William Thoburn and continued operation as a woollen mill until the 1950's. It is actually about ten buildings cobbled together, added to or filled in between after a good business year or one of the many fires. Since 2000 it has been completely gutted and redeveloped under the supervision of local architect Peter Mansfield. The building now houses technology companies, professional offices, artists, an art school and several residential apartments. All enjoy the views of the upper falls of the Mississippi River and the eccentricities of the architectural history. The nature of the original construction being a series of buildings, offered many opportunities for an exciting contemporary renovation. Interior brick walls that at one time were exterior walls create a beautifully textured atmosphere. The turbine still remains, although not functioning anymore and the millrace actually flows through and is visible under the floor of the lower level artists’ studio.
